STORY OF THE STYLE – CROPPED QUILT

In our ‘Story of the Style’ series, we talk you through the process of our newly coveted Reversible Cropped Quilt, to time with its highly anticipated launch.

We take you behind the scenes of the production process in our small family run factory near Venice, Italy, to understand the hours of meticulous work that goes into creating this new style.

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION?

This new shape was a natural progression following the success of our tried and tested original Signature Reversible Quilt, which has fast become our hero style and the essential piece to wear year-round across our global community. After receiving so much great feedback from our customers on its versatility, we took our original design intent - an adaptable and functional garment to be worn in multiple ways across different climates - and decided to offer a new shorter length for women who wanted a different silhouette but with all the same style, attention to detail and function as the original. For women who ride, cycle, or who are petite this style is the perfect alternative.  It also offers customers who own the classic quilt a new silhouette with a unique cocoon shape.  Furthermore, all of our uniquely buildable accessories can be worn and mixed and matched across both quilts to create a truly modular way of building, personalising and transforming pieces for lifelong wear. You can read more about how the Marfa Stance Quilt is becoming a cult favourite in this feature from the Financial Times How to Spend it.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE?

There is a lot of skilled hand work involved in crafting this piece. All in all it takes approximately 16 hours.

HOW MANY ARTISANS WORK ON IT AND WHO ARE THEY?

I work with exceptional craftswomen in my small hand-selected family run factories.  Around 6-8 different women are involved in the production, over in our factory Rebby near Venice, Italy. They also make for the likes of Lanvin and Moncler. The Rebby team making our pieces consist of a pattern maker, a quilter, one or two machinists, and a dedicated hand sewer for finishing, hand stitching buttons and steaming. In addition, there are another two people for quality control. Each Marfa Stance style has at least two rounds of quality checks at the end of the whole process before it is shipped to our customers.

WHAT ARE THE KEY DESIGN ELEMENTS?

A new gathered detail at the pocket and hem adds a time-consuming handmade element. This creates a very nice shape, is a subtle detail and functionally adds space for the pockets to hold more. The Italian nylon and padding used is all recycled using deadstock, ensuring nothing goes to waste. The stitch shape of the quilting also offers a loftier fit and softer feel.   Because this is a reversible construction, it means there is a lot of hand finishing. This ensures it is functional and durable with a clean luxury finish. Also, each loop and buttonhole patch are made completely by hand. While most quilts are stitched through and through, we use a doubled style which allows for pockets on both sides, and also a cosier feel. This, along with the fact the garment is fully bound, is a more expensive process, but we believe it is the best way to give the cleanest finish and reinforces the seams. This garment is made to last.

WHAT ARE THE MODULAR ELEMENTS?

Our range of uniquely buildable accessories is ever evolving and works across all styles in the collection. The original Removable Shearling Collars are a good place to start and we now have Reversible Quilted Collars and a range of Hoods. All buildable accessories easily button into the neckline of this new quilt, creating multiple ways to build, personalise and transform your own unique style. The Buildable Shearling Liner not only works under this new cropped style but also looks great layered on top too.New buildable accessories will be launching this month, to include a knitted wool and cashmere Reversible Hood, which looks great with the Cropped Quilt for Spring!
