What was your inspiration for the Varsity Jacket?

Like all Marfa Stance styles, each piece we create is always driven by the need to serve a purpose. Often inspired by the functional design of military clothing, the Varsity Jacket shifts focus to sportswear for the first time, taking inspiration from classic Americana collegiate team jackets.

A super versatile, lightweight everyday silhouette to compliment the full Marfa Stance line.  Designed to be worn in colder weather and traditionally made from wool and leather, the jacket serves a true outdoor purpose.

Crafted from luxurious surplus wools sourced from deadstock archives in London and Italy, the jacket is combined with compact, elevated glossy Italian satin, featuring placed quilted panels in a structured double onion quilt design. These contrasting panels play on the bold, graphic aesthetic of traditional varsity jackets, with colours like our signature safety orange, which references military influences but in a sportswear style.

HOW IS THE VARSITY JACKET MADE?

Since our garments function as two jackets in one, each panel is distinct and requires a high level of skill to construct. The Varsity Jacket features multiple components, including wool, satin, quilted satin, parachute detailing, quilted nylon, and more. As both sides are completely different, the construction process is complex and time-consuming.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE?

Production of the new Wool Varsity Quilt Jacket takes around 18 hours from start to finish.  The manufacturing process involves a production line of about five people, from cutting and quilting to stitching. Afterward, the jacket is pressed and undergoes quality control, meaning around 10 people are involved overall.

HOW IS THE DESIGN OF MARFA STANCE VARSITY JACKET DIFFERENT?

REVERSABILITY

The Wool Varsity Quilt Jacket is reversible, offering two distinct styles in one. On one side, the design draws from military, featuring bold orange accents, whilst the reverse side elevates the traditional varsity bomber in luxurious Italian satin.

PRACTICALITY

A key design feature of the jacket is the dual material sleeves: The satin side is positioned to make layering over sweaters easier, while the wool side, when worn next to the skin, offers extra warmth.

COMFORT + DURABILITY

The jacket also features double onion quilting on the satin side, giving it a structured and durable feel, consistent with traditional varsity jackets. Quilted panels on the back enhance comfort and durability, protecting the wool from friction caused by bag straps.

MODULARITY

The modular design gives the wearer agency to create their own unique version, with the option to add a hood for extra protection, a collar for both style and function, or a reversible liner to increase warmth in colder conditions.
