MARFA STANCE X

Marfa Stance is proud to stand with our friend Stephen Kenn, Marfa Maker and furniture designer, who translates the principles of Marfa Stance into the home. His work brings our approach to materials, utility and longevity into a new setting.

Stephen Kenn: Marfa Maker

Stephen’s practice is rooted in honest construction and materials with a history. Working with a close network of craftspeople in Los Angeles, the city he calls home, he creates original pieces designed to be lived with for years, letting the materials and the people who use them become part of the story.

The collaboration extends to the wider Marfa Stance creative community, including our friends at Gee’s Bend, whose quilting tradition reflects a belief in resourcefulness, craft and making something meaningful from what is already at hand.

The combination of Marfa Stance’s and Stephen’s core beliefs have helped create 4 bespoke pieces of furniture. Each showcasing the unique character of its materials and the hands that shaped them. Built to be used, worn in and passed along, these pieces carry the same spirit as the quilts of Gee's Bend: nothing wasted, everything made with intention, and beauty found in the lived-in.

Meet The Marfa Makers

Made from start to finish in his studio, each object is crafted with the belief that, when passed from one generation to the next, it can carry with it the values of adventure, curiosity, and quality.

THE CHAIRS

His iconic shapes are mirrored through our use of Gee’s Bend blankets, while our use of surplus materials runs in parallel to his approach - reimagining what already exists to create something new.

For general enquiries or to make a purchase, please contact our Brand Director, Jessica Hanbury, at Jessica@marfastance.com.

Please see below for the four chairs currently available to purchase.

GEE'S BEND QUILTS

Since the early twentieth century, the women of Gee’s Bend, a remote, Black community in Alabama, USA, have created hand-stitched, geometric quiltworks that are internationally recognised as modern masterpieces. Despite this recognition, artisans have faced difficulties monetising their work, while the community has struggled financially.

Through a partnership with NEST, a non-profit organisation supporting engagement with artisans, Marfa Stance has previously collaborated with Gee’s Bend on a collection of one-of-a-kind homewares, garments and art. That project generated revenue for the community and provided a blueprint for future income streams. We’re proud to be working once again with Gee’s Bend on the fabrics selected for our collaboration with Stephen Kenn Studio.
