Emma is an Irish-Nigerian award-winning broadcaster, Sunday Times best-selling author and Contributing Editor at ELLE UK. Her acclaimed books Don’t Touch My Hair and What White People Can Do Next: From Allyship to Coallition, draw on years of research and personal experience of racism to challenge and create meaningful, lasting change.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND

I’m from Dublin, my mom’s Irish and my dad’s Nigerian, I moved to London when I finished school and have been here ever since!

TALK US THROUGH YOUR CAREER JOURNEY SO FAR…

Reading was my first love, I started writing because I was a reader, but perhaps my love of reading was innate because I was already a writer before I knew it. I moved to London to do a degree in African Studies and history, I remember a lot of people being like “what’s that ? That’s not a proper subject, you’ll never get a job”! How wrong they were! But to be fair I am self-employed and I have very much carved out my own unique career path. My work has always felt more vocational – something I was called to do – rather than being specifically career oriented, so I feel very blessed that it is also my career!

Read, read, read.

Having written books that people have told me have transformed their outlook on the world.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU?

Lots of writing projects, I’m writing and performing a one woman stage show, as well as working on a novel.

HOW DO YOU STYLE YOUR MARFA STANCE PIECE AND WHY DO YOU LIKE THE BRAND?

I wear my Parachute Parka all the time, it’s just so flattering and incredibly versatile across seasons and looks, while my tote bag is my constant companion on my commutes to London!
