Meet The Marfa Makers

MARFA STANCE X

Marfa Stance is proud to stand with our friend Stephen Kenn, Marfa Maker and furniture designer, who translates the principles of Marfa Stance into the home. His work brings our approach to materials, utility and longevity into a new setting.

For this collaboration, Stephen has created a series of chairs upholstered in blankets from Marfa Stance’s Gee’s Bend collaboration. Their use here celebrates both designers’ approaches, rooted in resourcefulness, craft and the character that comes from using that which already exists. Together, they form a series of one-of-a-kind pieces, each with its own material history.

Stephen Kenn: Marfa Maker

Stephen’s practice is rooted in honest construction and materials with a history. Working with a close network of craftspeople in Los Angeles, the city he calls home, he creates original pieces designed to be lived with for years, allowing the character of the materials to deepen through use and become part of the story.

Discover more about Stephen Kenn and his practice below.

The combination of Marfa Stance’s and Stephen’s core beliefs have helped create 4 bespoke pieces of furniture. Each showcasing the unique character of its materials and the hands that shaped them. Built to be used, worn in and passed along, these pieces carry the same spirit as the quilts of Gee's Bend: nothing wasted, everything made with intention, and beauty found in the lived-in.

Meet The Marfa Makers

our SHARED ETHOS

Marfa Stance, Stephen Kenn and the quilters of Gee’s Bend each bring a distinct approach to making, united by a shared belief in resourcefulness, craftsmanship and longevity. From the reimagining of existing materials to Stephen’s handmade forms, each element carries its own history while finding new purpose through the collaboration.

Built to be lived with and passed on, the chairs embody this shared ethos. As Stephen puts it: “The journey of making leads me to the most beautiful people and places, and this collaboration with Marfa Stance is no exception.”

GEE'S BEND QUILTS

Since the early twentieth century, the women of Gee’s Bend, a remote, Black community in Alabama, USA, have created hand-stitched, geometric quiltworks that are internationally recognised as modern masterpieces. Despite this recognition, artisans have faced difficulties monetising their work, while the community has struggled financially.

Through a partnership with NEST, a non-profit organisation supporting engagement with artisans, Marfa Stance has previously collaborated with Gee’s Bend on a collection of one-of-a-kind homewares, garments and art. That project generated revenue for the community and provided a blueprint for future income streams. We’re proud to be working once again with Gee’s Bend on the fabrics selected for our collaboration with Stephen Kenn Studio.

THE CHAIRS

His iconic shapes are mirrored through our use of Gee’s Bend blankets, while our use of surplus materials runs in parallel to his approach - reimagining what already exists to create something new.
