Aviator Collar

There is a reason why the Aviator Collar is our best-selling modular attachment. Read all about the must-have addition to any Marfa Stance style in our interview with founder and designer Georgia Dant for the latest instalment of our ‘Story of the Style’ series.

What was your inspiration?

We developed the Aviator Collar in direct response to customer feedback, as one of my main reasons for starting Marfa Stance was to create pieces that solve problems and fill gaps in women’s lives. With the Shearling Collar already in our collection, I had a conversation with a customer about the need for something with more function and warmth during the cold New York winters. I immediately designed a new version of our Shearling Collar, adding the ability for it to be flipped up with the shearling flush against the neck, and a buckle feature that meant the collar could stay upright and function as a scarf, providing the thermal warmth she was looking for.

Alongside this practical design, the look of the Aviator Collar draws on vintage aviator jackets, and the use of surplus leathers explains the continually rotating assortment of striking colours and contrasting materials. This best-selling accessory year round represents the innate value of combining style with function, and how when unified it creates something beautiful yet purposeful.

How long does it take to make?

From start to finish the Aviator Collar requires four hours to be produced in our Florence factory. The process of selecting the deadstock leather and then applying our signature onion quilting, before attaching it to the soft shearling and adding the latch is arduous compared to the relatively small size of the item, but the purpose-led result makes it worth it.

How to build your aviator collar

Step by step guide

How many artisans work on it and who are they?

Our factory in Florence works with a dedicated fur artisan, who works on all of our buildable accessories, as they need expert care and skill. One artisan focuses only on the stitching, while another attaches the buttons, before each piece is thoroughly checked for quality control.

What are the key design elements?

In conceiving something functional I looked to evolve the design of the popular Shearling Collar. The soft cosy shearling texture remained but its surface size expanded for added warmth and the onion quilted napa leather backing for structure and sturdiness means it can be latched up around the neck using the buckle to keep out the wind and cold and alleviate the need for a scarf.
