Mickalene Thomas

We are proud to introduce our latest Marfa Muse, revered visual artist Mickalene Thomas.

Born and raised in New Jersey and currently residing in Brooklyn NY, Mickalene is one of the most influential artists of today. Her innovative practices and specialised stylistic model of rhinestone-embellished figurative paintings and collages creates instantly recognizable and widely celebrated pieces within contemporary visual culture. Her masterful mixed-media paintings, photographs, films and installations command space, and dissect the intersecting complexities of black and female identity within the Western world.

Mickalene’s work intersects with the world of fashion, most notably with her recent Dior collaboration. Maria Grazia Churi handed the scenography of the brands latest season over to Micklane, who created 13 photo collages of the extraordinary and revolutionary Black women who inspire her, which lined the walls of the runway. The inspiration behind this creative process stemmed from the importance of Black female role models that broke racial barriers by going against the grain and creating a new platform for many others.

Beyond the art world Mickalane is a Tony Award nominated co-producer, photographer, curator, educator and mentor to many emerging artists. Alongside her own shows, she simultaneously curates exhibitions at galleries and museums, and is an indispensable inspiration to younger generations of artists.

Mickalene wears the new iteration of our sell-out reversible Rain Coat, built with the matching Rain Hood in black. She layers with the Shearling Liner in black, which she also wears alone built with the new Zip Hood in black and cobalt.
