STORY OF THE STYLE – SIGNATURE QUILT

In our ‘Story of the Style’ series, we talk you through each Marfa Stance style. From how many hours it takes to produce, to who actually makes it. And what better place to start than with Georgia’s original design? Now a sell-out hit and where the Marfa Stance journey began. Introducing The Signature Reversible Quilt…

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION?

As a former transatlantic commuter, I saw a gap in the market for an adaptable and functional garment to be worn in multiple ways across different climates. After a year of developing and testing, the Signature Reversible Quilt was born: a buildable, reversible, and sustainable product to suit the modern-day global consumer. The quilt is a modular design, meaning you can build, adapt and evolve the style across seasons. This was heavily influenced by Italian designer Massimo Osti, as well as the multi-functional designs of American artist Donald Judd. In fact, Judd remains the pivotal moment I decided to launch the brand, while visiting his architectural studio on a road trip to Marfa, Texas in 2017.You can read more about my inspirations in this feature on Vanity Fair.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE?

There is a lot of skilled hand work involved in crafting this piece. All in all it takes approximately 16 hours.

HOW MANY ARTISANS WORK ON IT AND WHO ARE THEY?

I work with exceptional craftswomen in my small hand-selected family run factories. Around 6-8 different women are involved in the production, over in our factory Gesta Sportswear, near Florence, Italy. These women consist of a pattern maker, a quilter, a hand sewer, one or two machinists, and then another person for finishing, hand stitching buttons and steaming. In addition, there are another two people for quality control. Each Marfa Stance style has at least two rounds of quality checks at the end of the whole process before it is shipped to our customers. For more behind the scenes insights, check out our Instagram.

WHAT ARE THE KEY DESIGN ELEMENTS?

Sustainability is massively important to me. The Japanese nylon and padding used is all recycled using deadstock, ensuring nothing goes to waste. Because this is a reversible construction, it means there is a lot of hand finishing. This ensures it is functional and durable with a clean luxury finish. Also, each loop and buttonhole patch is made completely by hand. While most quilts are stitched through and through, we use a doubled style which allows for pockets on both sides, and also a cozier feel. This, along with the fact the garment is fully bound, is a more expensive process, but we believe it is the best way to give the cleanest finish and reinforces the seams. This garment is made to last.

WHAT ARE THE MODULAR ELEMENTS?

Buildable elements include our range of removable shearling collars, and reversible hoods. Both can be buttoned into the neckline of the quilt to personalize and update each season for a fresh look. There is also the option for you to attach your quilt to our wider outerwear collection. The quilt can then act as a liner to keep you warm during the colder months.
