Quilted Blanket, Stella Mae Pettway, Kristin Pettway and Pleasent Scott
Dimensions 152 x 183cm
Crafted exclusively for the Royal Academy of Arts, this reversible quilted blanket is currently on show in the Academicians' Room as part of the Marfa Stance and the quiltmakers of Gee's Bend display across the RA.
A unique juxtaposition of colours and fabrics, this striking blanket was handmade by Stella Mae Pettway, Kristin Pettway and Pleasent Scott, artisans of Gee’s Bend, a community of Black women quilters in Alabama. In a first for the collective, the women crafted these works of art from a combination of leftover luxury fabrics from Marfa Stance production in Italy, as well as found fabrics from the artists themselves.
The distinctive Gee’s Bend geometric designs were applied with traditional quilt piecing and sewing techniques, overlaid with Marfa Stance’s signature ‘onion’ topstitch. Each work took over a week to make and bears the individual quilter’s moniker.
The full collaboration and new collection of artworks can be viewed online, as well as in person at the Royal Academy. The seven reversible quilts will be on view in The Academicians’ Room in The Keeper’s House, Burlington House, and the five framed quilts and three wearable art pieces will be in the Burlington Gardens Shop.
