We are pleased to spotlight our latest Marfa Muse, ELLE Magazine’s Fashion and Accessories Market Director Alexis Wolfe. With a successful career working at fashion magazine houses in New York, we discuss how Alexis manages the balance with motherhood.
Alexis is 5 ft 1 and wears the Reversible Shearling Combo Quilt in Pale Jade in size XXS.
I grew up always wanting to work in fashion. When I came to NYC to study fashion at F.I.T. I interned at many magazines and upon graduating began my career as Fashion Assistant at Elle. After several years and being promoted to Fashion Editor Market Editor, I left to freelance, get married, travel and have two children. I was lucky enough to freelance for many different titles for almost 10 years. I returned to a full-time career six years at Marie Claire working under Nina Garcia (the then Fashion Director). Almost four years ago I returned to Elle as Accessories Director (continuing to work under Nina now as EIC). For the last two years I have been Fashion and Accessories Market Director. I love my job and cherish the relationships and friendships I have made throughout my career.
Pre-pandemic, I was lucky enough to organize my work schedule so that for the most part, I was able to commute to work after getting the kids out the door to school and be home early enough to prepare dinner and have bedtime. This was a huge priority of mine. Often that meant responding to emails late at night while folding laundry. There was a lot of time away from home for international travel, thankfully, my husband is very supportive and manages my fashion week and press trip travel seamlessly while I’m away (although there is a lot of questionable food choices i.e Lucky Charms for breakfast ;)
During the pandemic the kids have been home with us while we work from home as well. The lines have definitely been blurred as to when I am working and when I’m mommy. I am very fortunate to work for an organization that has been extremely supportive during these trying times. The boys have been a fixture on work zooms and conference calls. I am glad they have gotten a Birdseye view of what it is I do every day when I go to the office. And am so grateful that I have had these 15 months of non-stop time with them.
Often through Instagram as well as relationships with PR firms/reps who pitch new and emerging designers to me and my department at the magazine.
Boho chic. I love a good pair of vintage jeans and a white tee shirt. Layering jewelry usually a vintage turquoise piece with pendant necklaces.
I love to wear it with leggings, hoody and classic Ugg boot to run around with the kids or with jeans and a pair of heels for a work lunch.
